LMDA Tech Director Daniel Botha discusses a new top menu feature, designed to help customers discover your products quicker and easier. 

Let me first say that I am awed by the creative calibre of brands that have signed up as part of our launch promotion. Not only are your brands and products uniquely beautiful, but you’re also early adopters of what we hope to build into a transformative and decidedly different way of doing business online.

The fact that you, our first ever Ateliers, were hand-selected to be keystones of the LMDA Lifestyle experience, was part of our plan from day one. We believe that your brand stories and the people behind them add immeasurably to the value of your product. So we’ve focussed heavily on showcasing those facets as part of the buying experience on the site. We’re also keenly aware of the need to make product discovery easy, fun, and efficient. In pursuit of those goals, we’ve rolled out our first major user interface update, the Boutique menu.

The Boutique menu allows customers direct access to sitewide product categories. It’s an expansion on the idea of the current “Products” pages and offers a more intuitive way for customers to discover your products. That will invariably result in more opportunities for your awesome brands to win long-term loyalty.

It’s a relatively small technical change, but it has big implications on the buyer journey. We’re really excited to see how customers respond to it and will update you once we’ve collected sufficient data to judge whether the concept of the Boutique menu has achieved what we designed it to.

This weeks best practices top tips for Ateliers

things to keep a lookout for

  1. Keep the short description short – only one or two sentences that give a brief overview of the product, If this is eye-catching and enticing, it will encourage people to click to see more details, and then add to cart.
  2. Use the ‘featured product’ option – it’s the small star icon on the right-hand side menu of the products page, or if you click to edit a product, this will show on the top menu, When this is clicked the product will show on your main page, as well as your shopping page. Remember to change these products on a weekly basis to keep your page looking fresh. 
  3. Use the ‘linked option’ in the bottom product menu to showcase more of your products to customers. You can select Upsell or Cross-sell, this will direct the customer to similar products, either complimentary or in place of the item they are currently viewing. This is also a fabulous opportunity to network within the LMDA family, and arrange to promote complementary products from other Vendors on your store and vice versa.
  4. Take time to review your products on a regular basis, add additional images when you have them, re-read the descriptions and information, often fresh eyes spark fresh ideas.
  5. Make sure that you have noted your store and products’ unique selling point – this makes the engagement with the customers more personal.
